The belief dates back to the seventeenth century, with the magical association of the family hearth, heart of the home. Some of the more prosperous households even employed their own sweep to keep their chimneys in good order. Such families were considered to be of great fortune.

Another explanation rooted in the English history, to associate good luck with the humble chimney sweep is that on one journey King George 11’s horses bolted whilst drawing the Royal personage. The only person who attempted to stop the horses galloping away was a humble, sooty chimney sweep.

The appearance of a chimney sweep to give the bride the “kiss of luck” after the wedding ceremony is still widely held to bring the newly married couple good luck and good fortune to take into their future lives together. Sometimes the bride’s parents will hire a working chimney sweep to be present on their daughter’s big day, just to be on the safe side!
